How to Spot Fake Sneakers and Use Legit Check Services

How StockX, GOAT and eBay check sneakers, what legit check apps cost and promise, the warning signs of a fake, and what to do if you get one.

No single check proves a pair of sneakers is real. What you can do is stack the odds: buy where the pair gets inspected, use a legit check service as a second opinion, watch for warning signs, and pay in a way that lets you get your money back. This guide covers how StockX, GOAT and eBay authenticate, what legit check apps cost and promise, and what to do if a fake turns up anyway.

Policies and prices are as listed on each company's own pages on October 10, 2026.

How the big marketplaces check sneakers#

StockX. On StockX's Verified Marketplace, StockX says an order is either inspected by its verification team before it ships to you, or shipped by a StockX Verified Seller who has met its standards. StockX says it has rejected over 1.4 million items. If an item arrives not as described, buyers can open a return through StockX. On its separate Listings Marketplace, verification is an optional add-on for select items, so check which one you're buying from.

GOAT. For Ship-to-Verify orders, GOAT says its trained specialists inspect the item. If a problem turns up after purchase, GOAT may offer a replacement from another seller or a full refund, at its discretion. Items shipped directly by a partner or seller fall under its Buyer Protection Policy instead.

eBay. eBay's Authenticity Guarantee covers select brands and models priced at $75 or more, marked with a blue check mark. The pair ships to eBay's authenticators first, who inspect it within two business days, attach a QR tag, and send it on. If it isn't authentic, you get a full refund. Customized, modified, sealed, signed and lot listings aren't covered, and the tag must stay on for a return.

The common thread: check that your specific order goes through the platform's inspection, not just that the platform offers one. Our guide to StockX, GOAT and eBay fees compares these platforms from the seller's side.

Legit check apps and services#

When you buy outside a marketplace that inspects, a legit check service can give a second opinion from photos. Two well-known ones, in alphabetical order:

CheckCheckLegitApp
Who checksTwo independent human checkers, AI pre-screeningAt least two authenticators, with AI support
Turnaround4, 8, 12 or 24 hours for consumers10 minutes to 12 hours
PriceCredit packs: 6 for $8 up to 100 for $95Sneakers from $3, streetwear from $4
CertificateDigital certificate for passed luxury itemsDigital certificate with every order
GuaranteeConsumer guarantee for luxury categories; financial guarantee for business checks90-day financial guarantee, with limits

CheckCheck's pricing page doesn't show how many credits a sneaker check uses until you pick options. LegitApp's prices come from its App Store listing, which says detailed pricing is in the app.

Read the guarantees closely. LegitApp's pays general users in tokens or cash worth 10 times what the check cost, not the value of the shoes, and a formal dispute costs $200, refunded only if you win. CheckCheck's FAQ says plainly that no authentication service can be 100% perfect, especially using photos only. Treat any result as an opinion, not a certificate of truth.

Many resellers also ask for second opinions in sneaker-focused Discord communities or from experienced authenticators they know. There's no one Discord legit-check channel everyone trusts, and opinions vary. For expensive or often-faked pairs, the common habit is to stack independent checks: detailed photos, more than one service or authenticator, and the seller's history, rather than one app result or one anonymous opinion.

Warning signs of a fake#

None of these proves a pair is fake, but each is a reason to slow down:

  • The price is well below market for a hyped pair, with a reason that sounds rehearsed.
  • Stock or borrowed photos instead of the actual pair, or a seller who won't send tagged photos of the box label, tongue tag and soles.
  • A new or thin seller history, or feedback that doesn't match what they're selling now.
  • Pressure to pay fast or off-platform, especially by Friends and Family, Zelle or crypto.
  • Details that don't match, such as a box label with the wrong size or style code.

How to buy safely#

How you pay decides whether you can get your money back.

  • Use PayPal Goods and Services, not Friends and Family. PayPal's Purchase Protection doesn't cover Friends and Family payments, and PayPal warns that a seller pushing for one may be a scammer. With Goods and Services, the seller pays the fee, and an item advertised as authentic that turns out counterfeit is covered.
  • Keep the payment on the platform. eBay's Money Back Guarantee doesn't cover purchases where any part of the payment happened outside eBay.
  • A credit card gives you another route through your card issuer if a seller won't resolve a problem.

The same habits protect you from bot and cook group scams too; see our guide to spotting reseller scams.

What to do if you receive a fake#

  1. Document everything: photos of the pair, box and label, the listing, your messages and any legit check result.
  2. Use the platform's process first. On eBay, the Money Back Guarantee treats a counterfeit as not matching the listing. Request a return within 30 days of delivery, or the seller's window if longer, and ask eBay to step in if the seller doesn't resolve it within 3 business days. You may not have to ship a counterfeit back. On StockX or GOAT, contact support under their buyer policies.
  3. If you paid with PayPal Goods and Services, open a dispute within 30 days of delivery, or 180 days of payment, whichever comes first.
  4. If you paid by credit card, contact your issuer. The FTC says written disputes over billing errors must reach the issuer within 60 days of the first bill showing the charge. Federal protection for quality disputes comes with conditions, including first trying to resolve the problem with the seller, so ask your issuer what applies.
  5. Report fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Don't stack claims: eBay says filing a chargeback or another protection claim for the same purchase can cost you Money Back Guarantee coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Are legit check apps accurate?

They're expert opinions based on your photos, not proof. CheckCheck's own FAQ says no authentication service can be 100% perfect, especially using photos only. Use an app as one input alongside the seller's history, the price and how you pay.

How much does a sneaker legit check cost?

As listed in October 2026, LegitApp's App Store listing says sneaker checks start from $3. CheckCheck sells credit packs, from 6 credits for $8 to 100 credits for $95, and the credits a check uses depend on the item and turnaround time.

Does eBay authenticate sneakers?

For eligible sneakers, yes. eBay's Authenticity Guarantee covers select brands and models priced at $75 or more, shown with a blue check mark. The pair goes to eBay's authenticators first, and you get a full refund if it isn't authentic.

Should I pay with PayPal Friends and Family?

Not when buying from someone you don't know. PayPal's Purchase Protection doesn't cover Friends and Family payments, and PayPal warns that a seller pushing for one may be a scammer. Use Goods and Services, or buy through a marketplace's own checkout.

What should I do if I bought fake sneakers?

Act quickly. On eBay, request a return under the Money Back Guarantee within 30 days of delivery. With PayPal Goods and Services, open a dispute within 30 days of delivery. With a credit card, contact your card issuer about a dispute. Keep photos, messages and any authentication results.
