Preselling: eBay's Rules and the Risks

What preselling is, eBay's pre-sale listing rules, StockX and GOAT shipping deadlines and penalties, and what goes wrong when the item never arrives.

Preselling means listing and selling an item before you have it, usually a sneaker or sealed product you expect to buy at retail on release day. It can fix a selling price before the market moves, but it also means you've promised an item you don't control yet. This guide covers what eBay, StockX and GOAT say about it, and what happens when the item doesn't come through.

Policies are as listed on each platform's own pages on October 11, 2026. They change, so check the linked pages before you list anything you don't have in hand.

What preselling is#

A presale is any sale made before the seller has the item: a pair you have a confirmed order for, a preorder from a retailer, or a release you plan to buy. The buyer pays now and waits. The seller is betting that their own order arrives, on time and in the condition they described.

From experience. Presales are common on eBay and other marketplaces, and they can put the seller in a bad spot. Even with a strong bot setup, tools, proxies, servers and accounts, nothing is guaranteed: a checkout can fail or an order can be cancelled after you've sold the item. Some sellers, us included, decide the risk is worth it. That's a judgment each seller makes with their own money, not a recommendation.

eBay's pre-sale listings policy#

eBay is the most explicit of the three. Its pre-sale listings policy requires a seller to:

  • Guarantee shipment within 40 business days of purchase.
  • Label the item as presale in both the title and the description.
  • State the date the item will be available to ship.
  • Set a handling time that covers both getting the item and handing it to the carrier.

eBay says listings that break the policy can be removed, and that it can warn, restrict or suspend accounts. Its separate no item listings policy also bans placeholder listings and listings meant to mislead buyers.

Following the policy doesn't remove the normal buyer protections. Once the estimated delivery date passes, a buyer can open an item not received case under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, and late shipments and cancellations count against your seller performance. Our guide to eBay returns and disputes explains how those cases and defects work.

StockX and GOAT: deadlines are short#

StockX and GOAT are built around fast shipping, which leaves little room for an item you're still waiting on.

StockX (Verified Marketplace)GOAT

If you don't shipSale cancelled, $15 penaltySale cancelled, $10 fee
Knock-on effectsPossible account restrictions, suspension or a higher transaction fee10 points off your seller rating; higher commission

StockX. Its shipping deadline page gives Verified Marketplace sellers 2 business days to ship. New releases sold on release day get extra time, but items sold before release get the standard 2 days. If you miss the deadline after reminders, StockX cancels the sale, charges $15, and says it may restrict your account or raise your seller fee.

GOAT. Its selling policy, updated August 1, 2026, says listing photos must be of items in your possession, and requires shipping within 3 business days. A cancelled or late order costs $10, and GOAT's fee page takes 10 points off your seller rating for each cancellation. Below 90, the commission rises from 9.5% to 15%, and to 25% below 50. GOAT also says a seller rated below 50 can be suspended.

The risks of selling what you don't have#

Your retail order gets cancelled#

This is the big one. Retailers' terms let them cancel orders after checkout. Nike's US Terms of Sale say Nike accepts an order only when it ships, and may cancel orders placed with automated software, over purchase limits or flagged as fraud. Our guide to Nike SNKRS covers how that works for draws and releases.

TCG preorders carry the same risk. In September 2026, Kotaku reported that Pokémon Center cancelled a wave of 30th Celebration orders, including some from buyers who said they hadn't used bots. Kotaku said the total couldn't be confirmed. Our guides to buying TCG products at retail and the Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box explain how those drops and limits work.

If your order is cancelled, the buyer still expects the item. You can cancel and take the penalty, or buy it elsewhere, often at a higher price.

When you have to cancel an eBay order#

When we have to cancel, we follow eBay's steps. Per eBay's cancellation help page, you cancel from Orders in Seller Hub or My eBay, under More actions, up to 30 days after the sale. The buyer is refunded in full automatically. eBay's cancellation policy says to choose the accurate reason: out of stock brings a transaction defect, and using a different reason to avoid one isn't allowed. A cancellation can't be undone.

Never ship a cancelled order. In our experience, getting a seller to ship a cancelled order is a scam method buyers use. The buyer has already been refunded, so anything you send is a free item. eBay says sales that start on eBay can't be completed off its site, and that sales completed off eBay aren't covered by its protection programs. Its abusive buyer policy also bans asking a seller to ship to an address other than the one used at checkout.

Delays#

Shipping dates slip, and preorders can be pushed back. On StockX and GOAT a few days' delay can mean a cancelled sale. On eBay, a delay past your stated date can lead to late shipment defects and item not received cases.

Price swings#

A presale fixes your selling price, not your cost. If the market price rises after you sell, you're still committed at the old price, and buying a replacement can cost more than the sale brought in. If it falls, the presale worked in your favor that time, which says nothing about the next one.

Defects and account limits#

Each cancellation or late shipment is recorded. eBay rates sellers monthly on defect rate, late shipments and unresolved cases, and adds 6% to final value fees for Below Standard sellers. On GOAT, cancellations raise your commission on every later sale until your rating recovers. Repeated problems on any of the three can lead to restrictions or suspension.

Buyer disputes#

A buyer who has waited weeks may open a case, leave negative feedback or file a chargeback with their card issuer. Those cases are decided on whether you delivered what you promised, when you promised it.

Questions to ask before you presell#

  • Do I have a confirmed order, and does the retailer accept orders at checkout or only when they ship?
  • What's the platform's deadline, and can my order realistically arrive before it?
  • What does a cancellation cost me in fees, rating and future commission?
  • Could I replace the item if my order falls through, and at what price?
  • Have I followed the platform's rules, such as eBay's presale labeling and ship date?

Frequently asked questions

Is preselling allowed on eBay?

eBay has a pre-sale listings policy. As of October 2026, it requires the seller to guarantee shipment within 40 business days of purchase, label the item as presale in the title and description, state when it will be available to ship, and set a handling time that covers getting the item. Listings that break it can be removed, and accounts can be restricted or suspended.

What happens if I don't ship on time on StockX?

On StockX's Verified Marketplace, sellers have 2 business days to ship (more for some new releases sold on release day). If you miss the deadline after reminders, StockX cancels the sale and charges a $15 penalty, and says it may restrict your account or raise your transaction fee.

What does GOAT charge if I cancel a sale?

GOAT charges $10 for cancelling a confirmed order or not shipping within 3 business days. Each cancellation also takes 10 points off your seller rating, and a rating below 90 raises your commission from 9.5% to 15% or more.

Can a retailer cancel my order after I've already sold the item?

Yes. Retailers' terms let them cancel orders, for example Nike's US Terms of Sale say it may cancel orders placed with automated software, over purchase limits or flagged as fraud, and that it accepts an order only when it ships. If your source order is cancelled, you still owe the buyer the item.
