How to Price eBay Listings
How to price an eBay listing from sold data: Product Research, matching item and condition, auction vs Buy It Now, Best Offer, fees, ads and markdowns.
By OOSClub · Last reviewed
Researched from public informationThe price that sells an item on eBay comes from what buyers recently paid for the same thing in the same condition, not from what other sellers are asking. This guide covers how to find that number, which listing format and settings to use, and how fees, shipping and ads change what you keep, with a worked example.
Fees and tools are as listed on eBay's US help and Seller Center pages on October 11, 2026. eBay changes them, so check the linked pages before you list.
Start from sold listings, not active ones#
Active listings tell you what sellers hope to get. Some sit for months at prices nobody pays. Sold listings show what buyers actually paid, which is the better starting point.
Two places to find them:
- Search filters. eBay's Advanced Search has a Sold items option, which limits results to listings that ended in a sale.
- Product Research (formerly Terapeak). It's in the Research tab of Seller Hub. eBay's help page says it covers the last three years of eBay sales and shows typical sold prices, the spread of prices, shipping costs and which format sold, plus sell-through for searches of the last 90 days. eBay doesn't list a separate fee for it.
Sell-through matters as much as price. A high average price with low sell-through can mean a few lucky sales and a lot of unsold listings.
From experience. In our reselling business, eBay's sold data is one input, not the whole answer. We take the average of what the item sells for across the online marketplaces where it trades, then adjust up or down for how rare it is and how much demand there is.
Match the exact item and condition#
Comps only work if they're the same item. Filter or check for:
- The exact product: style code, colorway and size for sneakers; set, card number and variant for cards; the specific sealed product, not a similar bundle. Product Research can filter by identifiers such as UPC and MPN.
- The same condition. eBay's shoe conditions run from New with box and New without box to New with defects and three Pre-owned grades. A pair without its box usually shouldn't be priced off boxed sales.
- Graded vs raw cards. eBay separates graded cards from ungraded (raw) ones. Compare a graded card with sales of the same grade from the same grading company. Our guide to pricing trading cards covers card comps in more detail.
Throw out outliers: a sale that included extras, a damaged box, or a price far from the rest.
Buy It Now or auction#
Buy It Now (fixed price) suits items with steady, known prices. Fixed-price listings can be set to Good 'Til Cancelled and renew each month.
Auctions let buyers set the price. eBay's auction page says they suit sellers who want buyers to decide what an item is worth. Auctions run 1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days (1- and 3-day durations cost $1). You can add a Buy It Now price, which shows until the first bid and must be at least 30% above the starting price.
Reserve prices cost money whether or not the item sells: $5 or 7.5% of the reserve, whichever is greater, capped at $250. A $200 reserve costs $15. eBay doesn't refund it if the reserve isn't met or if you lower or remove it.
Best Offer, auto-accept and auto-decline#
Best Offer works on fixed-price listings. Per eBay's Best Offer page:
- Auto-accept takes any offer at or above an upper limit you set, which must be below your Buy It Now price.
- Auto-decline rejects offers below a lower limit.
- Offers in between wait for you. You have 24 hours to respond, and counteroffers last 96 hours.
- You can send offers to your 30 most recent interested buyers, at least 5% below your Buy It Now price.
If you list with Best Offer, price with room for it. We often list high and negotiate, accepting offers that land where we want to be. Set your auto-accept at a number you're actually happy with after fees.
Fees and shipping come out of the price#
eBay's final value fee is charged on the total sale amount, which includes buyer-paid shipping and sales tax, plus a per-order fee in most categories. As listed in October 2026:
- Most categories: 13.6% up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less).
- Trading cards and Collectible Card Games: 13.25% up to $7,500, plus the per-order fee.
- Sneakers at $150 or more: 8%, with no per-order fee. Below $150 they pay 13.6%.
Shipping is a cost too. If you offer free shipping, the label comes out of your price. For a side-by-side with StockX and GOAT, see StockX vs GOAT vs eBay fees.
Promoted listings and sales events#
General promoted listings charge only when an item sells within 30 days of a buyer clicking your ad. You choose an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the total sale amount, and eBay uses the rate in effect when the item sells. An accepted Best Offer still pays the ad fee if the buyer clicked the ad. Read eBay's general campaign page before you set a rate.
In our experience, promoted listings often aren't worth the ad fee on sought-after items, because buyers are already searching for them. That's one seller's judgment; the worked example below shows what an ad takes out.
Sale events in Discounts Manager let eBay Store subscribers mark down fixed-price listings by a percentage or amount, with the sale price shown in search.
A worked example#
Our own arithmetic, using the fees above. We assume 8% sales tax on the item and shipping, and a label that costs the same as the shipping charged. Your tax rate and label costs will differ, and item cost isn't included.
Two things stand out. Fees are charged on the tax, so the total is higher than your price. And free shipping on a lower accepted offer can cut what you keep by more than the discount suggests. Run your own numbers, including what you paid, with the resale profit calculator.
When to lower the price or relist#
There's no fixed rule, and we don't follow a set markdown schedule either. We price with the market, or slightly under the current average to make a listing stand out, and recheck when it isn't moving. A few signals to weigh:
- Watchers but no sales: buyers are interested but not at your price. Sending an offer to interested buyers is one option.
- No views or watchers: the problem may be the title, photos or category rather than the price.
- Sold comps have moved: prices on hyped items can move quickly around a release. Recheck sold listings before each price change.
- An auction ended unsold: check whether the starting price or reserve was above recent sales before relisting.
A wrong price can also lead to returns and disputes. If you describe condition carefully to justify a higher price, our guide to eBay returns and negative feedback covers what happens when a buyer disagrees.

Frequently asked questions
Should I price from sold or active listings on eBay?
Start from sold listings. Active listings show what sellers are asking, not what buyers paid. eBay's Advanced Search has a Sold items option, and Product Research in Seller Hub shows sold prices and their range across up to three years of eBay sales. Many sellers also check other marketplaces before settling on a price.
Is Terapeak free?
Product Research (formerly Terapeak) is in the Seller Hub Research tab, and eBay's help page says sellers with Seller Hub access can use it. The page doesn't list a separate fee.
How much does an eBay reserve price cost?
As listed in October 2026, the reserve fee is $5 or 7.5% of the reserve price, whichever is greater, capped at $250. It's charged when you list, whether or not the item sells.
How does Best Offer auto-accept work?
You set an upper limit, which must be below your Buy It Now price, and offers at or above it are accepted automatically. You can also set a lower limit, and offers below it are declined automatically. Offers between the two wait for you, and you have 24 hours to respond.
Do promoted listings cost money if the item doesn't sell?
Not with the general campaign strategy. You pay the ad rate you chose, as a percentage of the total sale amount, only if the item sells within 30 days of a buyer clicking your ad. The rate can be 2% to 100%.
