Funko, Hot Wheels RLC and Mattel Creations Drops
How Hot Wheels Red Line Club, Mattel Creations and Funko drops work: membership costs, purchase limits, rules on resale and bots, fakes and box condition.
By OOSClub · Last reviewed
Researched from public informationSome collectible drops aren't open to everyone. Hot Wheels Red Line Club cars can only be bought by paying members, and many Funko exclusives go through drawings, points or surprise drops. This guide explains how Mattel Creations and Funko sell their exclusives, what the memberships cost, the store rules on limits, resale and bots, and why box condition matters when you sell.
Prices and rules are from each company's own pages as listed in October 2026. They change, so check before you buy.
What a membership-gated drop is#
A membership-gated drop is a release that only members of a paid program can buy. The Hot Wheels Red Line Club (RLC) is the clearest example: Mattel says you must be a member to buy RLC cars.
It isn't the same as a loyalty program. Funko's Fan Rewards is free, and points earn you chances at some exclusives rather than the right to buy them. Both cut down who can buy, and neither promises you a purchase.
Mattel Creations and the Red Line Club#
Mattel Creations is Mattel's own online store for collector releases, and it's where RLC cars are sold.
- Price. The 1-year digital membership is listed at $9.99, non-refundable. Mattel's FAQ also lists an optional Membership Car Kit for $25 plus shipping and tax.
- Limits. One membership per email address and five per household. Members must be 18 or older with a valid credit card.
- Perks. Members-only cars, early access to select releases, voting on new castings, and members-only content and forums.
- The priority window. Members get first access, usually for 48 hours, but only while stock lasts. Mattel says the membership doesn't promise you can buy anything.
How fast cars go varies a lot. Collectors report that the most wanted RLC cars can sell out within minutes, while others stay available for days. Mattel's pages we read don't describe a waiting room, though collectors report lines on some high-demand drops.
RLC Overdrive is an add-on: a non-refundable $99 one-time fee, on top of the membership and the cost of the cars. It automatically buys each RLC exclusive drop unless you skip it within the 5 to 10 days Mattel gives you, and Overdrive members see drops before other RLC members. It's US-only, one per customer, and Overdrive members still follow purchase limits.
Mattel Creations' rules#
Mattel Creations' terms let Mattel limit quantities per order, person or household, refuse sales to dealers or resellers, and cancel any order for any reason. Two rules matter most for resellers:
- Multiple accounts. Using several email addresses or accounts to get around limits can get orders denied and accounts suspended.
- Order volume. Anyone placing more than three orders within 24 hours of a release goes into Mattel's fraud review queue.
Once you submit an order you can't cancel it, and returns must come back in the original packaging within 30 days.
Funko Shop drops and Fan Rewards#
Funko sells exclusives on Funko.com, often without notice. Funko has said most exclusives drop by surprise to keep the field level against bots, that checkout runs first in, first out, and that items in your cart aren't held for you.
- Fan Rewards is free. Members earn points on purchases and can redeem them for a chance to buy some exclusive products. Points can't be sold or transferred, and Funko can delete points earned through misuse.
- Limits and cancellations. Funko's cancellation policy says orders over the item limit, or suspected of bot purchasing, may be cancelled after you place them. Using multiple emails or altered addresses can get all your orders cancelled and you blocked. Orders for resale, or more than six of the same item, count as bulk and can be cut or cancelled.
- Terms. Funko's terms restrict purchases to personal, family or household use and ban robots and data-gathering tools.
Convention and retailer exclusives#
Convention exclusives are sold at shows and through online drawings. For New York Comic Con 2026, Funko ran a random virtual standby queue for its booth and a Funko.com drawing where your card was charged only if you were picked; Fan Rewards members could redeem points for a second entry. Our guide to how raffles work explains the same mechanics for sneakers.
Retailer exclusives are sold by one store. Hot Topic and BoxLunch both sell Pops labeled as store exclusives, and Target has a "Toys Only at Target" Funko page with figures named Target Exclusive. Each store sets its own rules: Target's terms ban unapproved buying agents and other agentic shopping tools, let it limit quantities by account, card or address, and reserve the right to refuse purchases by resellers.
Fakes and box condition#
Fake exclusive stickers are a known problem. Funko has said holographic stickers are easily counterfeited, and since 2024 it has used Octane5 stickers on many NYCC products, with a QR code and unique number you can check online. A POP's Today guide suggests checking that the box serial matches the stamped code on the figure's foot and notes that counterfeiters copy UPCs, so a barcode scan proves little. No single check is proof.
Box condition is part of the value. Marketplace rules show how much mint-in-box condition matters to buyers. StockX's collectibles guidelines reject Funko Pops with dented corners, ripped packaging, visible marks or creases, or sun fading, and don't accept loose figures.
Collectors apply the same eye beyond StockX:
- Funko Pops. Buyers look for a clean box, an intact window, sharp corners and an undamaged exclusive sticker.
- Hot Wheels. For carded cars, the card and the clear plastic blister matter as much as the car. Creases, bent corners, a cracked or yellowed blister, or a blister lifting off the card can cut the price a lot, especially on premium, limited or vintage cars.
Store boxed and carded items out of the sun and ship them in a protector inside a sturdy outer box.
Where to sell#
- StockX has listed Funko Pops since 2019 and lists Hot Wheels under collectibles, with verification on every sale.
- eBay is Funko's preferred secondary marketplace for vaulted products, and Funko helps it remove counterfeit listings. Toys fall under eBay's general rate of 13.6% of the total plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order.
Our comparison of StockX, GOAT and eBay fees shows how each platform's fees cut into a payout.
Monitors, cook groups and bots#
Cook groups and collectible-focused communities often cover Mattel Creations and Funko drops with release calendars, restock monitors, early product links and checkout tips. Funko itself says it cancels suspected bot orders. Our guides to how monitors work and cook groups explain what you'd be paying for. Before you use a bot or extra accounts, weigh the rules above: Funko and Mattel can cancel orders and close accounts, and our guide to buying retail accounts covers why bought accounts carry the same risks.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a Hot Wheels Red Line Club membership?
Mattel Creations lists the 1-year digital Red Line Club membership at $9.99, as of October 2026, limited to one per email address and five per household. RLC Overdrive, which automatically buys each RLC exclusive drop unless you skip it, is a separate $99 one-time fee on top of the membership and the cost of the cars.
Does an RLC membership guarantee I can buy the cars?
No. Mattel's membership page says the membership doesn't promise you can buy any product, and that quantities are limited. Members get a priority window, usually 48 hours, that lasts only while stock remains.
Is Funko Fan Rewards a paid membership?
No. Funko's Fan Rewards terms describe the program as free of membership fees. Members earn points on qualifying purchases and can redeem them for chances to buy some exclusive products, but points can't be sold or transferred.
Can Funko or Mattel cancel my order after I check out?
Yes. Funko's cancellation policy says orders over the item limit or suspected of bot purchasing may be cancelled after they're placed. Mattel Creations' terms let it refuse or cancel an order for any reason. Neither lets customers cancel an order once it's submitted.
