Amazon FBA Fees Explained
Every fee Amazon charges FBA sellers in 2026, from selling plans and referral fees to storage, low-inventory and removal fees, with a worked $25 example.
By OOSClub · Last reviewed
Researched from public informationAmazon FBA fees are what Amazon charges to sell, store and ship your products from its warehouses. A typical FBA sale pays a referral fee and a fulfillment fee, and storage, surcharges and a handful of other fees can come on top. This guide lists every fee in 2026, with example rates and a worked $25 sale.
Fees below are for Amazon's US marketplace as listed in October 2026. Amazon's own pages give the rules, but its full rate card sits inside Seller Central, so some example rates come from third-party summaries of it and are marked in the sources. Check Amazon's Revenue Calculator and Fee Preview report for your exact item.
Fees change every year#
For 2026, Amazon announced its US changes on October 15, 2025: FBA fees rose by about $0.08 per unit on average from January 15, 2026, with no new fee types. Amazon says it gives at least 90 days' notice of fee increases. Then, from April 17, 2026, it added a 3.5% "fuel and logistics" surcharge on FBA fulfillment fees, about $0.17 per unit on average, with no end date given. And from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, a holiday peak fulfillment fee adds about $0.32 per unit on average, with the surcharge on top.
Not every change lands in January, so re-check any numbers here before you buy stock, and again after Amazon's next yearly announcement.
Selling plans#
Every seller pays one of two plans, FBA or not:
- Individual: $0.99 per item sold, no monthly fee.
- Professional: $39.99 a month, no per-item fee.
At about 40 sales a month, the two cost the same. Our guide to FBA vs FBM covers what else each plan includes.
Referral fees#
Amazon takes a referral fee on every sale: a percentage of the total price (including any shipping and gift wrap the buyer pays), or a minimum fee, whichever is higher. Selected categories from Amazon's pricing page:
Books, music and video also pay a $1.80 closing fee per item.
FBA fulfillment fees#
The fulfillment fee is charged per unit sold and covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns handling. Amazon sets it by the product's price, weight and dimensions. Size tiers run from small standard and large standard up to small bulky, large bulky and extra-large. Amazon bills the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight (length times width times height, divided by 139), so a light item in a big box can cost more than you'd expect.
Example 2026 rates for non-apparel items, from a third-party summary of Amazon's rate card:
Items under $10 get the lower Low-Price FBA rate. These are non-peak rates; the holiday peak fee is added from October 15 to January 14. The 3.5% surcharge is a percentage of the fulfillment fee, not the sale price.
Storage fees#
Amazon charges storage monthly, per cubic foot, based on the average space your inventory takes up each day. Space costs much more in the holiday season:
Aged inventory surcharge. Stock stored for more than 181 days pays an extra monthly charge. 2026 summaries list it at $0.50 per cubic foot for 181 to 210 days, rising in steps to $7.90 per cubic foot after 456 days. Slow sellers get expensive quickly.
Other FBA fees#
- Inbound placement service fee. Charged per unit when you send standard or large bulky inventory to Amazon, depending on how many warehouses you ship to and where. ShipBob lists it at $0.21 to $6.00 per unit. Shipping to several warehouses yourself lowers it or removes it. Amazon offers new sellers a $400 credit toward these costs.
- Low-inventory-level fee. A per-unit fee when an item runs low compared with its sales. Amazon staff have said it applies when both the 30-day and 90-day historical days of supply are below 28 days. A 2026 summary lists it at $0.32 to $2.09 per unit by size and how low stock is, and say it's now calculated per FNSKU. New Professional sellers, new-to-FBA products and some categories, such as grocery, are exempt.
- Returns processing fee. Charged when Amazon offers the buyer free return shipping. Apparel and shoes pay it on every return; other categories pay only when their return rate exceeds a category threshold.
- Removal and disposal. If you have stock sent back to you or destroyed, Amazon charges per unit by size and weight. Third-party summaries put the lightest standard-size items at roughly $0.84 to $1.04 per unit, rising with weight.
A worked example: one $25 toy#
Here's what Amazon takes on a $25 toy in the large standard tier, weighing 1.6 lb, taking up 0.15 cubic feet and stored for one month, on the Professional plan. This is an example with our own arithmetic, rounded to the cent, using the rates above. For the holiday column we use Amazon's $0.32 average peak fee, since the exact peak rate for this item isn't public.
A few things to notice:
- Amazon's fees take about 39% to 41% of this sale, before you've paid for the item.
- The table leaves out the inbound placement fee, your shipping to Amazon, prep and labeling, and the Professional plan's monthly fee. On the Individual plan, take off another $0.99.
- A low-inventory fee of $0.97 per unit would apply if this item's stock fell below 14 days of supply.
- Storage barely matters for one month, but a unit sitting 300 days pays it every month plus the aged inventory surcharge.

How to keep fees down#
- Check the fee before you buy. Profit calculators and browser extensions show the referral and FBA fees on the Amazon page. Our guide to Amazon seller tools compares them.
- Buy what sells quickly, so stock doesn't sit into the aged inventory surcharge or the October to December storage rate.
- Watch packaging size, since dimensional weight can push an item into a higher tier.
- Keep stock balanced: enough to avoid the low-inventory fee, not so much that it ages.
- Compare FBM for slow, large or one-off items.
Fees are only part of the picture. Our guide to online and retail arbitrage covers the sourcing rules, and reseller taxes covers what you owe on what's left.
